Where The Heck Is Crescent City & Rose City Live!

When I lived in Vancouver Washington, model horse shows were plentiful. I could travel up to Seattle in 3 hours or down to Eugene in 2 hours. I attended several live shows a year and it seemed that there was always another show just around the corner. The Portland and Vancouver area has a fantastic group of hobbyists and it seemed like there was always a show to attend.
In 2004, I accepted a job with Del Norte Unified School District in Crescent City California. Crescent City is a remote coastal town on the border of California and Oregon. The population is approximately 8,000 people. Pelican Bay State Prison, a maximum security facility, houses over 2,000 inmates which may be included in the overall population. To put it plainly, Crescent City is a very small town.

Despite Crescent City’s small size, some of you may recognize the name. The Ewok Village in Star Wars : Return of the Jedi was filmed here in the towering redwood trees. Scenes from E.T. : The Extra-Terrestrial were also filmed here along with a list of other notable movies.

Those of you who have traveled the Pacific Coast down Highway 101 have passed through Crescent City and may have overnighted here. There isn’t a much to the town. There is a working harbor and a few restaurants. The downtown has some shops but it mostly consists of the post office, courthouse and a number of banks. Nothing too exciting I’m afraid! There are a number of hotels that are booked up during tourist season. But tourists don’t come to see the town. They come to see the State and National Parks, to walk through the redwoods and to fish in the rivers and the ocean. They come to escape city life and to immerse themselves in nature, if only for a few days.
Where am I going with this you ask? How can this possibly relate to model horses? Well, it doesn’t relate and yet it does. You won’t find a Breyer for sale within 100 miles of Crescent City (unless you come to my house, ha!) The closest model horse shows to me are those in the Portland Oregon area. This is roughly 350 miles and a 6 hour drive in each direction for me. When I first moved to Crescent City, I still made it to 1 or 2 model horse shows a year in Portland. Over the years I have attended less and less model horse shows. Aside from the new BreyerWest that was held in Albany Oregon this year, I have not attended a show in Portland in several years.
And then, while cruising Facebook, exactly as I shouldn’t be doing, I saw the Facebook group for Rose City Live. Rose City Live was one of my very favorite model horse shows. It is held in Portland on September 10th 2016. My brain is running in frantic circles trying to figure out how I can squeeze RCL into my schedule. The show is hosted by Vicky Harms and she runs a mean show! I highly recommend Rose City Live if you are in the Portland area. You won’t be disappointed!
