The Cost Of Shipping - The Franken Box

Shipping costs have sky rocketed. I have found one of the most economical ways to ship Breyer horses is by Priority Mail. 1 unboxed Traditional Breyer horse ships at a rate of 2 pounds. One of the gotcha’s is that Priority Mail is calculated by pounds only. A package weight of 1 pound and 1 ounce ships at a rate of 2 pounds, ouch! If you ship direct from the Post Office the cost looks something like this:

1 unboxed loose Traditional Scale Breyer Horse = 2 pound

From California to New York via Priority Mail = $11.25

1 boxed Traditional Scale Breyer Horse = 3 pounds

From California to New York via Priority Mail = $15.10

Ouch! Right? But the cost doesn’t stop here! Don’t forget packing. I buy my boxes in bulk from ULine. My favorite sized horse box is S - 4892. The dimensions are 16 x 14 x 6. This is the MAX allowable size of 36″ or 1 cubic foot for Priority Mail before incurring huge dimensional surcharges. The cost for such a box is $1.22 with a minimum order of 25. This does not include shipping which is quite hefty so let’s say $2 a box with shipping and tax delivered to your door.

And then there is the actual packaging like bubble wrap and popcorn and tape. The cost of (1) 7cu ft. bag of popcorn from ULine is $19 unshipped. The cost of (1) 12″ x 750′ roll of bubble wrap is $54 a roll unshipped. The tape is only a couple bucks a roll but all this really adds up. And that doesn’t even include the paper or the ink for printing labels and invoices.

I have found buyers like shipping to be rolled into the price of the horse. I try to do this with around half of my listings but can you see how hard this can be with oh say, the cost of shipping?! I do my best to cut the cost of shipping both for myself and for my customers. Firstly, I print my labels myself and this gives a bit of a discounted rate. Anyone can do this from the website usps.com. Secondly, I horde boxes and packing. Because of this, I no longer have a usable garage. Really! Honest, it’s stuffed full of horses and boxes. Third, I have begun to take advantage of the FREE Priority boxes that you can get from the post office. I used to steer away from these boxes. I found them to be horrible sizes for Breyers. The Priority Box 7 is 12″ x 12″ x 8″ and was too short in length for anything but standing horses. The Priority Box 1095 is 15.25″ x 12″ x 3″ and was too thin in width to accommodate anything but the skinniest of horses, Khemosabi anyone?! But you know what I learned? You can reshape Priority boxes as long as you still ship them by Priority Mail.

Sooo…the Priority Box 1095 has become my new best friend. It can be reshaped to fit a variety of boxed and unboxed Breyer horses. Dear hubby has been resizing these boxes to help me with my Ebay shipments but I found that I needed one tonight and he was working. I present to you, my very first, made by myself, FRANKEN BOX!

Fun In The Sun

breyerstanning

I live in Crescent City, California. This is a small coastal town on the border of California and Oregon. As with many parts of the world, we have been having a bit of an odd winter here. Winter normally means almost non stop rain from October until May or June. We had a late start to winter and with it came unusually cold weather (for us!) Don’t hate me all you east coast people! Freezing temperatures, even during the night are rare. There has been frost several mornings and the rain is here to stay. This week we had some sunny weather. And while it was still too cold for me to lounge on my patio chair, the Breyer horses have found use of it and laid outside during the day to tan!

I see you rolling your eyes. I’m not insane, at least not completely. I have had a lot of luck with whitening old Breyers using sunlight. The hard part is, we don’t see much sun here =p Ironically, the first thing I think of when we have clear skies in the morning is “Gotta put the Breyers outside!” I don’t know the chemistry behind it but sunlight seems to reverse the aged yellow look that white plastic takes on. If you look at the picture, you will see a lovely yellowed old glossy alabaster Breyer Proud Arabian Mare and Proud Arabian Foal on the top left. These are recent purchases for me, from Ebay no less! The alabaster Belgian on the top right isn’t really yellow but I put him outside for one day just to see. Now, there are multiple causes for yellowing on Breyers. Sunlight itself can cause yellowing as can smoke and various chemicals. I have only had luck whitening some horses and I think that these have been the ones that have yellowed either because of the sun or simply because of normal aging. I have heard that some paint colors are susceptible to fading when exposed to sunlight. I personally have never experienced this but we don’t get a lot of sun so it’s hard to over due it 🙂 Please do use caution but if you have a yellowed Breyer, try putting it in the sun and see if that doesn’t help brighten it up a bit!

The Power Of PowerSeller

Ever wonder what the power of a PowerSeller is on Ebay? This elusive power is known only to a select group of Ebay sellers. These particular sellers pay Ebay enormous amounts of money in fees. Since the start of Aidan’s Toy Trove last November, I have fed Ebay several hundred dollars to sell my merchandise. After factoring in Paypal fees, I estimate this number to be closer to a grand (yes, that’s $1000!) I squealed in delight when I saw my Bronze PowerSeller icon magically appear in my Ebay profile today.

It has been a busy 90 days and in an odd way, I’m pretty darn proud. So what do I get in return for all my hours of hard work? I’m prepared to share the secret behind the coveted Powerseller badge. Are you ready? It is…absolutely…nothing. Lol. No really, I couldn’t find any benefit to being a PowerSeller. My end goal is to be a Top Rated Seller which will give me a reduction in fees and PowerSeller is just a stepping stone to that. So anticlimactic, sigh. I guess I’ll just have to step up the speed of my listing, packing and shipping! Please help me keep feeding that monster that is Ebay. Treat yourself to an adorable Breyer Icicle Pony!

Or if Skylanders are more your thing, how about a rare variant Skylanders Granite Crusher?

Ooo Pretty Shiny Metallic Purple!

I purchased a lovely collection of Skylander off Ebay and they arrived today. In it was this pretty Skylanders Giants Metallic Purple Lightning Rod variant.

Gosh, I wish I could keep him! Alas he needs to go quickly before he takes up permanent residence here. There were a lot of nice Skylanders in this lot including a set of the mini sidekick giants, a Gold Flameslinger and a set of Legendary Skylanders. I am working on listing many of these Skylanders. Do keep an eye for them in my Ebay Store. Lots of good stuff here, stuff that I don’t need to keep =p

My Living Room Exploded

My living room exploded

….with model horses. I finished yet another round of cleaning the Breyer horses for sale. Any volunteers to come clean my living room? The majority of these horses have already been listed to EBay. The Breyer Alabaster Indian Pony is lovely with lots of grey shading. She has not been listed quite yet but rest assured she will be offered for sale. The Bay #141 Grazing Mare & #151 Grazing Foal have exceptionally nice color and have been put up for auction ending on Sunday February 16th.

Even if you aren’t interested in bidding, I encourage you to take a peak. I wish that Breyer would offer something more recent in a nicely shaded bay like this set 🙂
